"Vegans" who own animals, what do you do if they get fleas?

So in my experience most vegans profess to value all animal life equally. So does that mean that vegans allow fleas and other parasites to breed and take over in their house and on their animals? If you believe all animals should be treated as equals then what is the difference between a dog, a chicken, or a flea? Seems inherently hypocritical to me.
