Can someone help me train my dog?

My dog is 11 months, he'll be a year at the end of this month. He's a really sweet puppy, he just gets really excited when new people come around and he jumps. I've tried turning my back when he gets excited and starts jumping, making him sit till he's calm, putting him in his kennel till he calms down, some people have told me to smack his noes when he jumps (which i've tried and don't like doing and it doesn't work). Does someone have a solution that has worked on their dog? Also he licks people uncontrollably which is really gross considering he's a mastiff and is really slobbery. does anyone know how to make this stop?
