Must the mating relationship of marriage always lead to bearing children?

Other than where judges have imposed their personal morality over the decisions of legislatures and voters, marriage is the mating relationship of one man and one woman. However, some object to this definition by saying that not all man-woman couples produce children, and that therefore these couples are not really mating. Is this a reasonable objection to the decision to restrict marriage to one man and one woman?
